Sony announced today that Sony Online Entertainment has been sold to private investment firm Columbus Nova. With the acquisition, Columbus Nova has changed the name Sony Online Entertainment to Daybreak Game Company. Known for online games such as Planetside and the EverQuest series, SOE was working on a Free-to-Play, sandbox, Zombie-survival game called H1Z1.
“Today, we are pleased to announce that we have been acquired by Columbus Nova,” Daybreak Game Company said in a Reddit post, “[Columbus Nova is] an investment management firm well known for its success with its existing portfolio of technology, media and entertainment focused companies. This means that effective immediately SOE will operate as an independent game development studio where we will continue to focus on creating exceptional online games for players around the world, and now as a multi-platform gaming company. Yes, that means PlayStation and Xbox, mobile and more!”
When asked what this meant for H1Z1, Senior Game Designer Jimmy Whisenhunt said, “That means we keep on truckin’ at the pace we’re moving or faster 🙂 It’s a new day :D”
Obviously changes are going to be made to the company, but if those changes are for the better or for the worse remains to be seen.
